Byosen Reikan Hō is the traditional method of sensing where energy has gathered or thinned to shape a treatment. It is a process of listening to the body’s internal landscape through the hands. Within The Reiki Life approach, Byosen is the skill that turns a session into a living dialogue between the practitioner and the recipient’s own vitality.
The Mechanics: Byosen vs. Hibiki
In the Japanese tradition, we distinguish between the imbalance and the sensation:
- Byosen (The Source): The area of imbalance; a place where energy is stuck, heavy, or uneven.
- Hibiki (The Echo): The physical sensation in the hands used to find that area.
In practice, you feel for the Hibiki to locate the Byosen. This feedback dictates where your hands go and exactly how long they stay.
The Five Levels of Sensation (Hibiki)
Your file details specific indicators that reveal the state of the recipient’s field. We categorize these sensations to understand the “depth” of the work required:
- Heat (Netsu-kan): A temperature distinct from normal body heat. It indicates the initial presence of Byosen.
- Strong Heat: Indicates a higher level of accumulation or “fullness” in the area.
- Tingling (Shigeki-kan): Pins and needles or electrical sensations, often felt when energy is beginning to move or break up.
- Pulsing (Hibiki): A rhythmic throbbing or “heartbeat” in the palms, indicating a strong energetic demand.
- Pain (Itami): A dull ache or sharp sensation in the practitioner’s hands or up the arms. This is a reflection of the intensity of the blockage in the recipient, not a physical injury to the practitioner.
How to Practice: The Scanning Ritual
This requires a state of relaxed, passive attention.
- Preparation: Begin with Gassho and Joshin Kokyu Ho to settle your own system.
- Scanning: Move your hands slowly 2–4 inches above the body. Maintain a quiet mind, keeping your focus resting in the palms of your hands.
- Identifying the Draw: Notice magnetic pulls, repulsions, or any of the five sensations listed above.
- Application (Chiryo): Place your hands directly over the area of strongest sensation. Stay until the peak of the sensation passes and the pulse or heat begins to soften.
Integration with the Three Diamonds
Byosen is the practical application of the internal cultivation you do in your daily practice:
- The Earth Diamond (Hara): Provides the “weight” and stability needed to stay present when you feel intense sensations like pain or heavy heat.
- The Heart Diamond: Allows for a compassionate, open connection, ensuring you are “listening” rather than “diagnosing.”
- The Heaven Diamond: Provides the clarity to perceive these subtle changes without over-thinking or second-guessing what you feel.
